How to identify your target market and audience.

Once you learn the secret of identifying your niche - your goal is to drill down an inch wide - mile deep, then finding and retaining profitable customers becomes a lot easier. And that’s why over the next few weeks I’m going to share with you several steps for creating your marketing plan canvas and when you have an effective marketing system, you can finally build a real business.

So let’s start with the first one…

One way to get started is to divide your industry category into segments, another one is to segment your ideal clients.

For example, When a product or service is about risk avoidance, a solution that minimises that risk is worth talking about. If I were a lawyer, I’d specialise in a very narrow niche, becoming the best at defending a certain kind of lawsuit. If your company was the victim of one of these lawsuits, whom would you hire? The specialist who does nothing but defend(and win) cases like this, or your local firm? When someone has a problem like this, they are extremely open to external marketing messages, and they will seek out and usually find someone who presents them with the lowest possible downside.

Here are some of the questions you need to answer when deciding your best target market:

  • Who is profitable for you?

  • Who is your ideal client?

  • Who are you okay dealing with?


Here is a sample target audience for big fat marketing agency:

Founders & Business owners - Ambitious, confident & impatient, ages 30 - 60.

Growing businesses with revenue between £250K -  £5m.

Big believer in the power of content, notice advertising on transport, particularly in

trade magazines, and are most responsive to online ads.

Their results from old-style campaigns are flattening out and they want to fix their

marketing strategy.


Sounds pretty easy, right? But a lot of people screw this up due to lack of knowledge, time and tools. And most of the time they don’t even realise they’ve done it wrong, because they get some result - no wonder their ads deliver poor results. But when you target everyone it becomes very costly as you are wasting advertising cost on prospects that will never buy from you, instead of increasing the value you deliver to prospects willing and ready to buy from you.

So let’s avoid all of that. If you want to reduce your marketing budget and increase your lead quality as well then you need to take your target market very seriously….and stop competing with thousands of other companies in every category. So get amazing results with this step. It's the very first step you should take to create your own marketing plan canvas, then you need to know who your audience are.
